#8 - Do 10 Smaller Road Races

As part of my 101 in 1001 my goal was to run in 10 small road races - by definition meaning shorter distance than the half-marathon.

New Year means time to refocus on goals that I set for myself (because I'm not myself unless I have goals!)  This one was technically completed in July 2013 with the last race in Stowe, Vermont.  It was also a few weeks before I was in my accident.  Overall - I am proud of the times - slow compared to others running around me, but on pace for what was at one time supposed to be warm up training for the marathon.  Now that I am settling back into Virginia, there are a few things I am starting to miss about New England; the most important being the liquor stores!  But actually as I mentioned in a post last April after the Marathon Bombing, (New England Runner) New England, especially in & around Boston, has one of the best running communities I will be fortunate to be a part of in this lifetime.  Without further ado - here are the 10 races with light commentary (and perhaps a picture or two).

1.              Lynn Great Stew Chase 15K (February 3, 2013); 2:08:00
·         Cold as the dickens - snowed in the last three miles and was the third to last.  The stew was well deserved.
2.              Bradford Valentine’s Day 5 mile race (February 16, 2013); 1:01:28
·         This was the third year that I've done this race - I ran my ass off those hills!

3.              Black Cat 10 Miler (March 2, 2013); 2:11:50
·         Second year that I did this race.   I think it is safe to say that both times it kicked my ass.
4.              Cohasset 10K (April 7, 2013); 1:19:02
·         One of the most beautiful courses along the sea coast

5.              Chase the Gorilla Down 5K (April 13, 2013); 34:18
·         A fun little 5K that involved literally chasing a gorilla.  Ran one of my best 5K times.
6.              Backshore 5 mile (May 10, 2013); 1:00:27
·         Even better shoreline race.  Friday night race that moved very quickly.
7.              Rockport Father’s Day 10K (June 16, 2013); 1:19:55
·         I’ll never forget the older men who helped keep me on pace!  (And I even let one of them beat me across the finish line – at least that is what I keep telling myself)

8.              BAA 10K (June 23, 2013); 1:24:16
·         This was the first BAA race right after the Marathon.
9.              Las Vegas 5K (July 4, 2013); 43:31
·         This was fing hot . . . . . Vegas in July=104 degrees at 7 am
10.          Hillie’s Havoc 4 mile (July 11, 2013); 55:43
·         More freaking hills – at least this was a fun trail run
11.          Stowe 8 miler (July 14, 2013); 1:51:24
·         Hot Air Balloons at the start & Ice Cream/Beer at the finish line

Walk to Mordor Update:  230 miles!
